Food Chronicles | Cantinho do Avillez (Lisbon)

Chef José Avillez is among the most respected Portuguese chefs and is probably one of the most entrepreneurs. With five restaurants in Lisbon and one in Oporto, Chef Avillez expresses his great passion for gastronomy through different proposals capable of captivating different audiences.

He has been dubbed the King of Chiado, with its five restaurants within steps of each other. Among the Belcanto, situated in the building of the São Carlos National Theatre and awarded two Michelin stars, the Cantinho do Avillez, the Mini Bar (in St. Louis Theatre), the Café Lisboa and the Pizzeria Lisboa, there will be certainly an offer for all tastes.

The Cantinho do Avillez has a relaxed atmosphere and is a nice place for a snack with friends. Our trip to the Cantinho combined some of the restaurant dishes with a pizza from Pizzeria Lisboa (which is just down the road). In seeking the Cantinho, we ended up going first to the pizzeria to ask for information and the employee who served us was super helpful, calling immediately the restaurant to warn that we were going there.

When we arrive, minutes later, they had already prepared the table and gave us the opportunity to also ask for a pizza. The couvert is a delight, with several types of bread, a divine tomato sauce, olive oil, butter and olives. For starters we opted by Nisa cheese in the oven, with Alentejo ham and rosemary honey and the homemade canned tuna with ginger and lime. Both delicious choices! For main course we opted for Figueira pizza (tomato, mozzarella, Algarve figs, Chaves ham and basil) and it was a good choice. The very fine and perfect dough and generous and full of flavor topping. We accompanied all with the restaurant iced tea (Black Tea Gorreana with cinnamon and orange). I was sorry that I not have the time for dessert. But the famous Avelã3 will not escape me on the next visit.

I liked the space, the service was exemplary and the food is tasty and made with quality ingredients. But with so many good things to experience, the nest time  in Lisbon I will definitely go back to the Cantinho do Avillez.
