In the main façade of Praça do Comércio, the scenic Lisbon square facing the Tagus, stands the triumphal arch commissioned in the 18th century. Although designed in 1775, as part of the reconstruction project of the city after the great earthquake the current version only was concluded one century later in 1875.
The group of sculptures facing the square represent Glory, crowning both Genius and Valor as the major virtues. Bellow stand the sculptures of national heroes. Usually the arch is named Rua Augusta Arch and in the side facing the street you can find a clock decorated with naturalistic motifs.
The monument was restored recently and now is possible to visit the terrace for an amazing view of the square, the river and most of downtown. I strongly recommend to go a little before sunset and not to forget your camera, so you can take some photos in full light and some in the twilight. You wont regretted.
